Nissan Leaf Dual Control Car Hire

At Volt-Age we believe that all sectors of the motor industry can benefit from the uptake of EV’s, and dual-control cars for driving instructors are no exception.

We currently use the Nissan Leaf 40kWh Tekna as our dual control car with prices starting from as little as £40 per day.

Numerous ADI Instructors have already embraced electric dual-control cars. We reached out to independent ADI EV advocates online, to share their honest insights on why they made the switch to EV. If you remain unconvinced, experience it firsthand by renting a dual-control car from our electric lineup. Once you do, reverting to petrol or diesel engines will be unimaginable, and you'll help meet the growing demand for electric driving lessons among young drivers.

"As a driving instructor in Portsmouth I’ve been teaching automatic learners for 14 years. In this time I’d had a couple of Hybrid cars and realised fully Electric Cars are the way we’re heading and I wanted to teach in an EV. Living in Southsea where most of us don’t have off street parking, I started to write to local Councillors about 4 years ago asking what they were doing about residents charging. I wasn’t the only person pestering Portsmouth City Council and last year they installed 36 residents chargers in response to residents requests. They plan to install another 79 this year. Consequently, I was able to buy my Nissan Leaf 30kW. These residents chargers are a brilliant initiative by Portsmouth City Council. Due to my persistent communications with the council I ended up on local radio and TV and in the local press at the launch event. Some interesting experiences.

As a car I find my Nissan Leaf better in every way to a fossil car. The quietness makes it a very calm teaching environment. Pupils really enjoy learning in it. The 30kW Leaf fitted into my normal teaching routine well. I do four 1.5 hour lessons a day with an hour at home for lunch. I start a day with a full battery and plug it in for an hour at lunchtime usually ending the day with about 20% battery. Understandably there's a lot of concern about range before you buy an EV. However, when you own one it’s something you almost never think about.

If you have a dual control car with enough range to do a days work it never becomes an issue. Before buying the car I monitored my daily mileage for a few weeks to see what range I could work with.

“The biggest benefit has been the cost savings. Running costs of an EV are minuscule compared to petrol and diesel cars. There is no way I can imagine going back to a fossil car.

After taking a Nissan Leaf test drive in 2015 I found myself unhappy with my combustion car by comparison, so in early 2017 I switched to teaching in an EV. The primary benefit has been a far more enjoyable teaching and driving environment, closely followed by significant running cost savings and the reassurance of the ever increasing environmental credentials of electric cars. As manual car production continues to rapidly decline, coupled with the generational and technological shift towards modern automatic cars the number of driving instructors teaching auto will continue to rise and many will turn to the benefits of the electric car."

“I've been an ADI since about 1900, and frozen to death! I starting using solar power for my house some twenty years ago, and in 2015 took the plunge and moved over to an EV for my driving school car. I'm now on my 3rd Electric Car and the advantages include, vastly cheaper running costs, a vastly nicer teaching environment, and of course, it’s much healthier for you, the pupil and the planet! There are a few downsides, they can be more expensive to buy (that's changing) and insurance can sometimes be more expensive (but not always). I would consider going back to a fossil fuel car, but only when hell freezes over! My pupils love EV’s nearly as much as I do. Try it and see!”
